Land of the Pharaohs
Egypt is one of the world’s most famous tourist destinations. A land of magic and of history, Egypt has put its name on the map with some of the most magnificent monuments in the World. It’s a known fact that a huge percentage of people in the Earth can identify the pyramids and the sphinx, as they are among the most famous wonders of the World. What most people don’t know is that, although the three pyramids we see near Cairo, guarded by the sphinx, are the most famous ones, there are over 80 pyramids in the entire country, and each has a story to tell. Egypt vacations are full of history, and there are a lot of famous monuments that you can see and experience for yourself.Abu Simbel is one of my favorite and one of the grandest monuments in Egypt. It’s a temple carved in a mountain that is very well known for its façade: four gigantic statues of the pharaoh Ramses II. The temple was moved in the late 60’s as it was in danger of being flooded, but it retains all of its glory.
Another monument you can’t miss is the temple complex of Karnak. An incredibly important place of worship and of power – Karnak priests were rich and had a lot of influence over the monarch – it’s an island with three large temple and several smaller ones. The largest, and most impressive, is the Temple of Amun.
Keeping with temple complexes, the ones in Luxor are among the most famous. Luxor is built on the site of ancient Thebes, a city incredibly important in Egyptian history.
The Valley of the Kings, in the valley of the Nile, is an enormous underground necropolis with 62 burial grounds. Though not all burial temples have been completely unearthed, and although you cannot visit all of them, it’s the site of some very famous tombs, including the one of the famous Tutankamon.
Finally, a trip to Egypt isn’t complete without a visit to the capital of the Ptolomean dynasty, Alexandria. Founded by Alexander the Great it was home to great episodes of Egyptian history. It was there, for example, that Queen Cleopatra met Cesar and later Mark Anthony. The city was home to two of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the Library of Alexandria and the Great Lighthouse.
